About this map

The Matanuska River valley in the early 1950s is defined here by a concentrated intersection of coal mining and early Alaskan transport networks. This survey illustrates the industrial footprint near Wishbone Hill, where the Eska Mine and Buffalo Mine are joined by several sites already marked as defunct, such as the New Black Diamond Mine (Abandoned) and Baxter Mine (Aban'd). These operations were served by the Alaska Railroad, which snakes through the valley alongside the Glenn Highway.
