Angel Draw and Scanlon Draw carve through this corner of the Permian Basin, defining a landscape of arid basins and drainage patterns in the decade before 2020. This desert terrain in southeast New Mexico is characterized by its wide, low-lying depressions such as Burton Flat and Saladar Flat. Water is a seasonal and scarce presence here, concentrated at Alkali Lake and the northern edge of Lake Avalon.
