The Mississippi River forms a dominant corridor through this landscape, marking the state boundary between Missouri and Illinois. Along the Missouri banks, the small settlements of Annada and Kissenger occupy the lowlands between the river and the dramatic rising terrain of Saltpeter Bluff and Kissenger Hill. This area is defined by its complex riparian geography, where numerous islands such as Carroll Island and Coon Island are separated from the mainland by an intricate network of sloughs, including Shafer Slough and Rabourn Slough.
