The northern slopes of the Capitan Mountains dominate the southern portion of this landscape, where the Lincoln National Forest boundary marks a transition from high peaks into a series of deeply carved drainages. The terrain is defined by a network of seasonal watercourses and topographic landmarks, including Copeland Canyon and Red Lick Canyon, which channel runoff northward from the higher elevations. In the more level northwestern reaches, Lonetree Lake serves as a distinct hydrologic feature in an otherwise arid expanse.
