Mount Hood National Forest anchors this high-elevation landscape along the boundary of Hood River and Wasco counties. The area is defined by a series of prominent peaks and ridgelines, most notably Lookout Mtn and Badger Butte, which overlook a network of alpine lakes and meadows. Recreational and resource access is facilitated by a complex system of forest roads, including Natl Forest Develop Road 3540 Rd and Bennett Pass Rd, which provide passage through difficult terrain like Gumjuwac Saddle. Historical land use is evident in the naming of clearings and seasonal camps such as High Prairie, Bonney Meadows, and Elk Meadows. The hydrology of the eastern Cascades is well-represented, showing the headwaters of Dog River and Badger Creek, alongside natural catchments like Badger Lake and the smaller Jean Lake.
