Laurel Hill dominates the western half of this quadrangle, serving as a backdrop for the transition between the deep woods of Forbes State Forest and the agricultural valley settlements to the east. The Pennsylvania Turnpike cuts a bold line across the landscape, disappearing into the Laurel Hill Tunnel as it bypasses the steep elevations that defined travel in earlier eras. This 1967 survey, updated with 1973 photogrammetric data, captures the region at a height of recreational development, featuring the Plateau De Mount Ski Area and the established boundaries of Kooser State Park.
