1969 Map of Basque Summit

USGS Topo · Published 1972

About this map

The Desatoya Mountains dominate this high-desert landscape along the border of Churchill and Lander counties. This 1969 survey captures the intersection of historical transit and modern ranching, centered on the Old Overland Road that winds through the mountains toward Basque Summit. To the northwest, the Edwards Creek Valley contains an isolated landing strip, while remnants of the region's pioneering history are visible at the Overland Mail Station (Ruins). Natural springs like Topia Spring and Barret Spring provide essential water sources for the Smith Creek Ranch and local livestock in an otherwise arid environment. Evidence of much earlier inhabitants is documented by a site of Petroglyphs near Edwards Creek, suggesting the long-standing importance of these mountain passes.
