About this map

Holter Lake dominates the center of this landscape, its waters filling the Missouri River canyon where the river carves a sharp path through the Big Belt Mountains. This 1962 field-checked survey reveals a rugged geography of steep drainages and mountain peaks, including Jackson Peak and Beartooth Mountain. The shoreline features several small-scale developments like the Indian Trail Lodge and Sperry Ranch, along with remote aviation points such as the Ming Bar Landing Strip. At the southern end of the sheet, the river enters the famed Gates of the Rocky Mountains, a landmark named by Lewis and Clark. Significant wilderness access is provided via the Beartooth Road and the Merivether Canyon Trail, which winds through the Helena National Forest and past the historic site of Mann Gulch.
