Shaw Creek Flats dominates the lower half of this landscape in the Southeast Fairbanks region. The area is defined by a dense network of wetlands and meandering waterways, where the terrain transitions from the high, relief-heavy ridges in the north down into the expansive basin of the flats. Caribou Cr winds extensively through both the upland sections and the lowland marshes, reflecting a drainage pattern typical of this subarctic environment. The lack of established roads or structures during this 2016 survey highlights the isolation of Cottonwood Cr and Shaw Cr, emphasizing a wilderness primarily shaped by hydrologic forces rather than human development.
