The Military Reservation occupies much of the northern half of this terrain, where the South Fork Chena River and its tributaries like Stuart Creek and Pines Creek drain the interior uplands. Evidence of early aviation and transport in the subarctic is visible through a remote Landing Strip and a Tractor Trail that meanders through the southern river valleys.

Along the winding course of the Salcha River, various Cabins and occasional Ruins suggest a history of seasonal use or early homesteading. The hydrology of the area is particularly complex, defined by features such as Koepke Sl and the curiously named Ninetyeight Creek. This 1950s survey captures a landscape largely shaped by its water systems and military designation before more modern developments reached this part of the Fairbanks North Star Borough.
