The Colorado River forms the vital western boundary of this desert landscape, separating San Bernardino County, California, from the Colorado River Indian Reservation in Arizona. At the close of the 1950s, the region was defined by a heavy industrial footprint in the Buckskin Mountains, where a network of prospects and claims like the Mineral Hill Mines, Mammon Mine, and Billy Mack Mine punctuate the arid peaks.

Settlement is concentrated along the river corridor at Cross Roads and Cienega Springs, while the southern reaches give way to the expansive, sandy Cactus Plain. Transportation is anchored by the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad in the south, passing through the siding at Denny. High-altitude landmarks such as Black Peak, topped with a Radio & TV Repeater Sta, and Gibraltar Mtn serve as primary navigational points across this multi-state borderland.
