Buena Vista and the surrounding Carroll County countryside are defined by a network of drainage canals and small agricultural settlements at mid-century. This survey illustrates the engineered landscape of the Big Sandy River Drainage Canal and the Beaver Creek Drainage Canal, which altered natural water flows to support local farming. The area is heavily marked by family history, containing numerous small burial grounds such as Jamison Cem, Cawthon Cem, and Mebane Cem near Smyrna.
