The industrial and transit hub of Carrollton sits on higher ground to the northwest, anchored by its Courthouse and Post Office, while the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe and Wabash railroads converge nearby to serve the region's agricultural economy.

A network of rural education and community centers is preserved here through several local schoolhouses, including Dietrich Sch, Mayview Sch, and Cary Sch. Below the bluffs, an extensive Levee system protects the fertile flats around Wakenda and the small settlement of Eugene. These lowlands are crisscrossed by smaller waterways like Little Wakenda Creek and Miller Branch, which terminate in the expansive river valley.
