The Yellowstone River flows through the western edge of this McKenzie County landscape, crossed by the Hjalmer Nelson Memorial Bridge north of the settlement at Cartwright. This modern topographic study reveals a deeply eroded terrain defined by numerous drainage features, including Sheep Coulee, Sweening Coulee, and Number One Coulee. These coulees carve through the high ground east of the river valley, illustrating the complex hydrology of the western North Dakota badlands.
