The Yellowstone River cuts through the western edge of this McKenzie County landscape, crossed by the Hjalmer Nelson Memorial Bridge just north of Cartwright. The settlement of Cartwright serves as a local anchor near the junction of several drainage systems, including Charbonneau Cr and the extensive coulees that define the regional topography. To the east, the terrain transitions into the protected open spaces of the Little Missouri National Grassland, where the land is carved by numerous named draws.
