The Yellowstone River flows along the western edge of this landscape, crossed by the Hjalmer Nelson Memorial Bridge near the small settlement of Cartwright. The area is defined by the transition from the river valley to the expansive Little Missouri National Grassland, where numerous coulees like Sheep Coulee and Vanderhoof Coulee drain the upland terrain.

Genealogists and local historians will find several established family operations, including the H Iszler Ranch, J Walker Ranch, and Winder Ranch, which dot the drainages of Charbonneau Creek and Horse Creek. Infrastructure of the late twentieth century is evidenced by the Mule Creek Substation and several irrigation laterals, including Lateral M, which follow the contours of the river plain.
