Fish Slough dominates the eastern basin of this high-desert landscape, a critical riparian corridor bordered by the massive Volcanic Tableland. The terrain is defined by dramatic elevation shifts where the volcanic plateau drops into the Chalfant Valley and Hammil Valley. Evidence of human utility and settlement is sparse but significant, including the Aqueduct in the northeast and isolated sites like Milner 2 and various Gravel Pits.

Large portions of the map are designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern, reflecting the sensitive nature of the springs and marshes that provide a sharp contrast to the surrounding arid canyons. Geologic features such as Chidago Canyon and the white outcroppings of Chalk punctuate the landscape, while ancient activity is hinted at by the presence of Ruins near the southern boundary. The network of 4wd tracks and the Fish Slough Road provide the primary access through this complex terrain of basins and plateaus.
