Oneida Lake dominates the northern half of this central New York landscape, its southern shore lined with early twentieth-century landings and rail stops like Lakeport and South Bay. The interior is defined by a dense transportation corridor where the Erie Canal runs parallel to the New York Central and Hudson River R. R. and the West Shore R. R. through Canastota and Chittenango Station.

South of the canal, the terrain rises into the northern reaches of the Cazenovia and Fenner uplands, punctuated by landmarks such as Eagle Hill and the therapeutic enclave of Chittenango Springs. Local history is preserved in the detailed mapping of the Fyler Settlement and smaller farming hamlets like Clockville and Quality Hill. The landscape transitions from the marshy Cicero Swamp in the west to the network of creeks including Canaseraga Creek and Cowaselon Creek that drain the fertile agricultural lands of Madison County.
