The small settlement of Colgan anchors this high-plains landscape just south of the international border. In this corner of Divide County, the terrain is characterized by a dense network of glacial prairie potholes and small seasonal wetlands that dot the agricultural grid. A systematic grid of section roads, including 109th St NW and 135th Ave NW, provides access to the surrounding farmsteads and fields. The area reflects the classic township and range survey system, where transportation follows strict cardinal lines around numerous small water bodies. This 2011 survey by the U.S. Geological Survey shows a rural environment defined by its water management and agricultural infrastructure, from 102nd St NW at the southern edge to the reaches near the Canadian border.
