About this map

Corkscrew Swamp dominates the southeastern reaches of this landscape, a complex hydrologic network at the junction of Lee Co and Collier Co. Topographic surveys from the late 1950s, updated with aerial data from the mid-1980s, reveal a transition from the dense, saturated environments of Panther Island to more structured drainage patterns and land improvements. The presence of a Flowing Well and an isolated Landing Strip suggests the early infrastructure of wilderness management and agricultural expansion. Land lines in the southern sections remained unsurveyed at the time of the original planetable work, highlighting the difficulty of mapping this interior Florida terrain before modern aerial revisions identified the evolving woodland boundaries and canal systems.
