1972 Map of Curran

About this map

Curran serves as the central hub of this northern Michigan landscape, located just north of the sprawling Huron National Forest. The map documents a transition from the agricultural and settlement patterns near Curran Cem to the dense, water-rich woodlands of the Mitchell township. The terrain is defined by a glacial topography of numerous kettle lakes and winding waterways, including Carp Lake, Byron Lake, and the complex Hoist Lakes system. To the south, the Au Sable River cuts across the corner of the sheet, joined by Penoyer Creek. Evidence of the area's industrial past is etched into the land via the Old Railroad Grade, which once facilitated the region's timber harvest. Small-scale aviation and ranching are represented by the Rocky R Ranch and its adjacent Landing Strip near the northern border.
