Balaton sits at the northeastern corner of this prairie landscape, where the headwaters of the Redwood River and Cottonwood River emerge from the high ground of the Coteau des Prairies. This 2019 survey documents a rural landscape defined by glacial depressions and a high concentration of small, family-associated cemeteries that reflect the early Scandinavian and German Lutheran settlement patterns of the region. Notable burial grounds include Sillerud Cem, Skandia Cem, and Zion Lutheran Cem, often positioned on rises near water features.
