Smackout Valley and the high ridges of the Colville National Forest define this landscape along the border of Stevens and Pend Oreille counties. The terrain is marked by isolated clearings and seasonal camps such as Smackout Camp, Speller Camp, Paff Clearing, and Peterson Clearing, which suggest a history of forestry and early mountain settlement. The northern reaches are dominated by Deep Lake, with access provided by the Deep Lake N Shore Rd and Deep Lake S Shore Rd. High peaks including Sherlock Peak, Baldy Mtn, and Huckleberry Mtn surround these valleys, connected by a network of National Forest development roads and the crossing at Smackout Pass. This map captures a remote area where numerous watercourses like Little Smackout Cr and Jim Cr feed into the complex drainage system of the Inland Northwest.
