Deep Lake sits at the northern edge of this high-elevation terrain in the Colville National Forest, where the boundary between Stevens and Pend Oreille counties divides the mountain ridges. The landscape is defined by its deep drainages and named valleys, most notably Smackout Valley and Paradise Valley. These lowlands are hemmed in by significant peaks such as Sherlock Peak, Baldy Mtn, and Huckleberry Mtn, creating a topography where travel is dictated by mountain gaps like Smackout Pass.
