Buttonbox Lake and the dense cluster of waters surrounding it highlight the glacial topography of this northern landscape in the early twenty-first century. The area is defined by a complex network of small lakes and narrow water bodies, including the uniquely shaped Five Island Lake and the aptly named Little Island Lake. While many of these basins remain isolated, others are linked by local travel routes such as Roller Coaster Rd and N Pickerel Rd, which navigate the elevation changes between the shorelines. The east-west corridor of MN-1 bisects the region, passing just south of Townline Lake and near the perfectly circular Mirror Lake. To the north, the Horseshoe Forest Trl provides access to the woods near Potato Lake and Little Horseshoe Lake, marking a pattern of seasonal recreation and forestry common to this part of the county.
