The Little Missouri National Grassland dominates the northern reaches of this McKenzie County landscape, where the broken terrain is defined by a complex network of coulees and seasonal watercourses. The drainage patterns of the Missouri River plateau are clearly visible through features such as Greeneu Coulee and Jackson Coulee, which carve through the high prairie. In the southern portion of the map, the namesake Demicks Lake provides a significant water feature amidst the sectional grid of the Badlands' eastern fringe.
