About this map

The Del Norte Co Siskiyou Co Boundary runs through the high alpine country of the Siskiyou Mountains, where three different national forests meet. This 1981 survey documents a wilderness landscape defined by the convergence of the Six Rivers National Forest, Siskiyou National Forest, and Klamath National Forest. At the center of the sheet, the Devils Punchbowl lies just below Bear Mtn, a prominent peak surrounded by high-altitude features like Bear Paw and Wilderness Falls. Traces of human activity are minimal and focused on seasonal access or early history, including the Prescott Cabin (Ruins) and a Prospect noted near Doe Creek. The drainage of the South Fork Smith River and the Middle Fork Smith River carved deep valleys into the terrain, while high basins hold numerous small glacial waters such as Buck Lake, Elk Lake, and Island Lake.
