Diamond Mountain rises as the central landmark of this high-country landscape, straddling the boundary between Lassen and Plumas counties. The northern slopes are defined by water management and early settlement markers, including the Ridenoure Reservoir, Emerson Lake, and the local Richmond School. A significant site for regional history is the Peter Lassen Grave located near Lassen Creek, marking the legacy of the pioneer for whom the surrounding peak and national forest are named.

To the south, the terrain transitions into the more remote reaches of the Plumas National Forest, where resource and livestock activity is evidenced by Wheeler Sheep Camp and several quarries. This 1990s revision of earlier aerial photography highlights a network of mountain access routes like the Skyline Motorway and Diamond Mountain Motorway, which connect high-elevation features like Gilman Basin and the Red Rock lookout to the valleys below.
