About this map

Nuyakuk Lake and Lake Kulik dominate this interior Alaskan landscape, separated by a high mountain ridge and connected through a network of waterways. Surveyed by the Army Map Service and published by the Geological Survey, the map illustrates a wilderness dominated by elevation and water rather than human settlement. Eagle Mountain rises between the two great lakes, while the Wood River and Grant River provide drainage for the surrounding terrain. To the northwest, the Red Hills stand as a distinct landform above the northern shore of Nuyakuk. The survey reflects a mid-century effort to document the Seward Meridian using photogrammetric methods from aerial photography, capturing the raw geography of the region before significant modern development altered these remote drainages.
