About this map

Gold mining operations and hydroelectric infrastructure dominate this mid-century landscape in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The hydraulic mining legacy of the California Gold Rush is visible through extensive areas of scarred earth, specifically the Liberty Hill Diggings, Nichols Diggings, and the colorfully named Pug Ugly Diggings. These massive earth-moving projects are interspersed with the mid-20th-century development of the Southern Pacific Railroad and U.S. Route 40, which follow the narrow ridges above the North Fork American River.
