Elk Mountain rises as the central landmark of this northeast Oregon landscape, located within the protected boundaries of the Wallowa National Forest. The topography is defined by a series of drainages and named depressions, such as Slack Canyon and Gould Gulch, which channel seasonal water toward Elk Cr and Beaver Cr. In the southwest, the terrain levels slightly at Arkansas Hollow, where Arkansas Hollow RD and Swamp Creek LN provide access to the foothills.
