The Alabama River carves a winding path through this portion of Dallas County, defining the local geography with distinctive riverine features like Molette Bend and the navigational landmarks of Upper Sister Bar, Lower Sister Bar, and Providence Bar. High bluffs overlooking the water, notably Milton Bluff and the namesake settlement of Elm Bluff, provided strategic high ground in an area otherwise dominated by the complex drainage networks of Mush Creek and Cedar Creek.
