About this map

Coastal San Diego County undergoes significant suburban expansion as seen in this 1968 survey, which was photorevised in 1975 to show the rapid growth of Encinitas and Leucadia. The landscape is defined by the intersection of the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad and the San Diego Freeway, which cut through a series of natural lagoons including Batiquitos Lagoon and San Elijo Lagoon. Residential developments are beginning to fill the spaces between the Pacific shoreline and the inland hills of Los Encenitos. Local history is visible in the network of schools and civic institutions such as San Dieguito Union High Sch, St Johns Sch, and the Quail Park Botanical Garden. The presence of the La Costa Country Club and numerous state beaches like Moonlight State Beach illustrates the area's transition into a major recreation and residential corridor.
