Fairfield serves as the central community of this section of Billings County, situated at the intersection of a grid-based rural road system. This high-plains landscape is largely defined by the Little Missouri National Grassland, also abbreviated as Lmng, which encompasses much of the western terrain. The hydrology of the area is centered on the Knife River, which meanders across the central and eastern portions, joined by smaller tributaries such as Magpie Cr and Horse Cr. The presence of the Immaculate Conception Cem northeast of the settlement highlights the importance of local heritage and genealogy in this cattle-ranching and farming region. A network of secondary roads and the Prairie Trl provide access through the rolling terrain, illustrating the persistent importance of transport routes in North Dakota's expansive ranching country.
