Farmington and the smaller settlement of Walters anchor this 2017 study of the borderlands between Whitman County, Washington, and Latah County, Idaho. The landscape is defined by the transition from the rolling agricultural plains of the Palouse to the forested foothills of the St. Joe National Forest. Prominent landmarks such as Stratton Butte and Palmer Butte rise above the drainage systems of Pine Cr and Silver Cr.
