Military outposts and early rail lines define this stretch of the West Texas border along the Rio Grande as it appeared in the late 19th century. The landscape is dominated by the Quitman Mountains, Finlay Mts., and Malone Mts., which served as formidable barriers for the surveying of the Galveston Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway. This infrastructure became the primary artery for the region, connecting isolated stops like Madden, Finlay, and Malone.
