The Mazatzal Mountains rise sharply in this high-altitude portion of the Tonto National Forest, where the boundary between Gila and Maricopa counties follows the high ridgelines. The landscape is dominated by the distinctive massif of the Four Peaks, including the towering summit of Browns Peak and the nearby Ziltadin Mtn. This area serves as a significant drainage divide, with numerous seasonal water sources such as Amethyst Spring, Shake Spring, and Middle Water Spring tucked into the steep drainages.
