Frenchburg stands as the primary hub of this eastern Kentucky landscape, where the deeply dissected plateau of the Daniel Boone National Forest dictates the layout of human settlement. The topography is defined by a dense network of ridges and hollows, forcing communities and roads into the narrow corridors between high ground. Small clusters like Cornwell, Rothwell, and Fagan are linked by winding routes such as Old US Hwy 460 and the Claude Ingram Rd, which navigate the elevation changes between Hatton Ridge and McCausey Ridge.

The local geography is heavily marked by family and descriptive place names found in the countless hollows, including Pigeon Roost Hollow, Sugar Camp Hollow, and Tackett Hollow. These names reflect a long history of subsistence and woodcraft in the Cumberland Plateau region.
