About this map

The West Branch Susquehanna River cuts a deep serpentine path through the Clearfield County highlands, anchoring a landscape defined by isolated plateau settlements and heavy industrial extraction. In the late 1950s, the region was a patchwork of small communities like Frenchville, Keewaydin, and the Guenot Settlement, many established along the ridge tops above the river valley. The Penn Central railroad follows the tight northern bank of the river, serving as the primary transit artery for the numerous Strip Mine operations that pockmark the terrain, particularly around Sylvan Grove. The presence of St Johns Ch and Sylvan Grove Ch alongside several small family or community cemeteries highlights the deep-rooted local genealogy of these upland townships. To the south, the Caledonia Pike and the Ames Landing Field near Kylertown show the gradual modernization of transport in this rugged coal and timber corridor.
