Industrial activity and ranching define the landscape west of Gallup in the early 1960s. The northern reaches of the map show the Rock Spring Ranch and Rock Spring Navajo Mission set against the high terrain of Black Ridge. To the south, the coal mining legacy of the region is evident through the Defiance Mine and the Carbon City Mine near Mentmore, where extensive mine dumps and tailings piles mark the earth.

Transportation and infrastructure dominate the lower half of the sheet, with the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railroad and a 4 Lane highway paralleling the Puerco River. The community of Gamerco stands out as a hub of settlement, complete with its own Gamerco Sch and proximity to China Springs. This period of growth is further highlighted by the expansion of the Gallup-McKinley County Airport and the development of nearby Trailer Park housing.
