The Mississippi River defines the western reaches of this landscape, separating the bottomlands of Lincoln Co and Pike Co from the bluff-lined terrain of Calhoun Co. In this contemporary 2021 study, the riverine environment remains dominant, marked by a complex network of chutes and islands such as Westport Chute, Eagle Island, and Sterling Island. The transition from the alluvial plain to the dissected uplands is immediate, where numerous named ravines like North Prong Irish Hollow and McNabb Hollow carve into the heights of Dividing Ridge.
