About this map

Naval Petroleum Reserve No 4 dominates this stretch of the North Slope, where the frozen landscape meets the Beaufort Sea. The terrain is a complex mosaic of thaw lakes and wetlands, characterized by the massive expanse of Teshekpuk Lake to the west and the coastal waters of Harrison Bay to the east. Transportation through this remote environment is represented by a Winter Trail, reflecting the seasonal logistics required for Arctic movement. Human presence is sparse, noted only by a Shelter cabin (abandoned) near the confluence of the Kogru River. Compiled from 1954 photography by the Army Map Service, this record shows the region before major modern oil infrastructure, when drainage patterns like Garry Creek and the vast tundra plains remained largely undisturbed.
