About this map

Hecla stands as the primary point of settlement in this part of the Nebraska Sandhills, positioned along the southern edge of a landscape defined by complex topography and the headwaters of the Loup River system. The northern half of the region is characterized by the branching of the Middle Loup River, including the N Br Middle Loup River, the Middle Br Middle Loup River, and the S Br Middle Loup River. These waterways carve narrow valleys through the high, rolling dunes that dominate the terrain. A notable administrative division occurs at the Cherry Co Hooker Co line, which bisects the quadrangle horizontally. Transportation in the area is largely facilitated by Old Hwy-2, which runs parallel to the southern drainage patterns and provides the main link between the small ranching outposts of the central plains.
