Heinola serves as the central community in this 2010 study of Otter Tail County's glacial landscape, where the agricultural grid meets a series of significant water bodies. The terrain is defined by the connection between West Leaf Lake and East Leaf Lake, which feed the Leaf River as it flows eastward. Several family and community burial grounds, including Prairie Cemetery, Woodland Cemetery, and Leaf Lake Cemetery, are preserved across the quadrangle, offering points of interest for genealogical research. The road network is a mixture of established routes like County Hwy-54 and local access ways such as Cordes Beach Rd and Leaf River Rd, which trace the shorelines and provide access to the area's numerous wetlands and smaller unnamed basins.
