Highland Peak towers over a landscape defined by intensive mining activity during the mid-twentieth century. The eastern slopes are etched with numerous workings including the Florence Mine, Hamburg Mine, and the Lucky Boy Shaft. Significant engineering feats such as the Manhattan Tunnel and X-Ray Tunnel penetrate the mountainside, while an Old Railroad Grade and the Union Pacific trackage trace the valley floor.

Remote outposts like Montgomerys Cabin and Wheeler Ranch provide evidence of early high-desert habitation and livestock operations. The terrain is deeply carved by numerous drainages, most notably Water Canyon and Anderson Canyon, which lead toward critical water sources like Highland Spring and Floral Spring. The proximity of the Pioche Municipal Airport at the northeast corner connects this industrial and ranching district to the broader region, while the Mt Diablo Base Line provides the primary surveying anchor for the township.
