Home Creek Butte rises as a prominent landmark within the northeastern reaches of the Custer National Forest, dominating a landscape defined by an intricate network of drainage basins and high ridges. The area is marked by a clear dependence on water management for livestock or local use, evidenced by the numerous small impoundments such as Phillips Reservoir, Knudson Reservoir, and the Logging Cr Reservoir. Transport through this part of Powder River County is funneled through named breaks in the topography, most notably Camps Pass and the ominously named Suicide Pass.
