Idaho Falls and the agricultural lands of the Snake River Plain dominate the eastern portion of this 1955 survey, which was updated with aerial data through the late 1970s. The landscape is defined by its dramatic volcanic geology, including the extensive lava fields of the Craters of the Moon National Monument and the massive Idaho National Engineering Laboratory site. To the west, the White Knob Mountains and Pioneer Mountains rise sharply, feeding the Big Lost River which disappears into the desert floor at the sinks.
