About this map

The low-lying wetlands of Southwest Florida dominate this landscape along the border of Collier Co and Hendry Co. The terrain is characterized by a complex network of seasonal water and swampy ground, reflected in the large-scale water management efforts visible via the long Levee running through the eastern sections. In the southwest corner, the Seaboard Coast Line railroad cuts a diagonal path across the landscape, providing a critical transport link through this sparsely populated region. The small settlement of Thorp stands as one of the few named landmarks in a territory otherwise defined by its drainage patterns and natural vegetation. This survey, compiled from 1950s planetable work with 1970s aerial revisions, shows the transition from undisturbed wetlands to a managed agricultural and transit corridor.
