1948 Map of Iron Mountain

About this map

Iron Mountain and the high desert peaks of the Tonto National Forest dominate this postwar survey, where the landscape is defined by its deep canyon systems and isolated ranching outposts. The boundary between the Tonto and the Crook National Forest cuts through this terrain, which is punctuated by small, vital water sources such as Frog Springs, Whiskey Spr, and Crockett Spr. Evidence of early habitation and resource extraction is found throughout, notably at the Cliff Dwellings in Rogers Canyon and the remnants of a former industry at Rogers Troughs (Old Mill).
