Johnson City and the Tri-Cities anchor this mid-century view of the Southern Appalachians, a landscape defined by the parallel ridges of Clinch Mountain and Copper Ridge. Compiled by the Army Map Service and revised in 1966, the map records the region as it balanced a traditional mountain economy with massive hydroelectric and industrial development. The massive reservoirs of Norris Lake, Cherokee Lake, and Douglas Lake dominate the valleys, signifying the transformation of the Clinch River and Holston River systems.
